As a ceramic artist and Architect with an interest in Archaeology, I explore
imagery of encrusted surfaces and forms which simultaneously embody or
evoke ancient and present time, and usually appear to have been lifted
from ancient tombs.
Additionally, exploring ideas with a sense of humor and somewhat quirky associations interests me. This has generally led me away from pure function as the work has become more sculptural and expressive.
Overall, "process" is satisfying: finding local clay deposits, developing a
workable body, exploring form, and firing various regimes. Most of my
current work is barrel-fired earthenware, using foil saggers with various
combustibles and surface treatments, and although I strive to control
basics, ultimately the process retains its own magical secrets, so that
every piece is a delightful discovery.
It has been said that ceramic folk tend to be mud daubers or pyromaniacs.
I am both.
